Do you have a joint injury? Our PTs can help

The whole body is connected in one way or another. If you’re experiencing joint pain in one area of your body, you’re likely feeling it in other parts as well. It is important to understand that an injured or arthritic joint is part of the whole body and not something that can be treated in isolation. The reason physiotherapy is so important to the recovery process is because of our interconnected skeletons.

In this post by Dr. Kevin Stone, “Physical Therapy is Vital to Joint Injury Treatment“, he explains in more detail the importance of receiving physiotherapy to figure out why the patient got injured, to teach the patient exercises and techniques in order to recover the injury, and to guide and motivate them to work to improve their issues. In some cases, physiotherapy can help patients avoid surgery altogether.

At Speers Health Clinics, our physiotherapists aim to keep your active lifestyle pain-free and will take you through the necessary steps in order to do so.

PTs view on golf related injuries

With golf season well underway, there are many injuries that can occur from playing the game. The most common are the following:

  • Lower back strain: rarely a first-time event, often related to pre-existing back problems
  • Rotator cuff tear: often with pre-existing pathology present
  • Fractured hook of hamate: related to hitting a large number of golf balls, or contacting the ground/mat repeatedly. This injury is more common in golf than in any other sport.

To learn some tips and suggestions from a physiotherapists perspective on how to help prevent these injuries, check out, “Golf Related Injuries a Physiotherapists View“.

Our well-trained physiotherapists can help you enjoy a pain-free golf season. Contact our friendly staff at 403.556.9911 or by email to book an appointment with one of our therapists.

Custom orthotics & choosing the right athletic shoe

At Speers Health Clinics, our physiotherapists are trained to assess and prepare the castings for custom foot orthotics. Orthotics are prescribed devices worn in shoes to improve inefficient functions of the feet, ankles and legs. The use of orthotics can reduce or eliminate discomfort and pain in these areas as well as in the hips and back.

Orthotics are also prescribed to accommodate a variety of uncomfortable “wear and tear” foot conditions such as excess callus, bone spurs, plantar faciitis and soft tissue degeneration.

Although orthotics do more than just serve as arch supports, they do not permanently correct or change a person’s anatomy. And they do not replace stretching and strenghthening exercises or other forms of therapy.

Properly designed and expertly fitted footwear is very important to pair with orthotics. Avoid poorly constructed, non-supportive footwear as orthotics need a strong, stable, supportive base.

When purchasing footwear, we recommend that you ask for service from a salesperson who is experienced in fitting orthotic users. Here are some tips for choosing the right athletic shoes.

Benefits of physio beyond injury treatment

May is National Physiotherapy Month, and thus, we felt it was a good time to share that there are many benefits to physiotherapy beyond injury treatment. In this blog from the Huffington Post, The Benefits of Physiotherapy Go Beyond Treating Injuries, Maureen Hagan explains the method of prehabilitation, what exactly physiotherapy is and why she decided to become a physiotherapist.

At Speers Health Clinics, we have experienced physiotherapists that help you reach your health care goals and keep your active lifestyle pain-free. Physiotherapists combine their knowledge of the body and how it works with specific hands-on clinical skills. They assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of injury or illness. Each case is extensively researched and tailored for each individual’s specific needs.

Physiotherapy treatments can include the following, but are not limited to:
• Exercise programs designed to improve muscle strength
• Improving joint ability and range of motion
• Improving overall functional mobility and balance
• Enhance performance
• Massage
• Airway clearance methods to treat breathing difficulties
